January 21st – 27 is cervical cancer prevention week, to promote awareness of cervical cancer and to encourage people to attend their smear tests.
1 in 4 women do not attend their smear tests, however smear testing can prevent up to 75% of cervical cancers. 2 women lose their lives to the disease every day, and 9 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer on a daily basis.
The frequency in which you should need to attend a smear test varies, however the NHS states that all women who are registered with a GP are invited for cervical screening:
- aged 25 to 49 – every 3 years
- aged 50 to 64 – every 5 years
- over 65 – only women who have recently had abnormal tests
Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust are running a #SmearforSmear campaign to help promote awareness and educate people on the importance of smear testing. For information, support and help regarding cervical cancer treatment and prevention, visit their website for resources: https://www.jostrust.org.uk/
